It’s always fun going on these European treks. But last year I got really ill in Germany. I’m hoping not to get sick this time. Getting sick in a foreign country is not something I recommend.
I set up this tour entirely myself, just like the last two. I do not have an entourage or a press agent or a booking company or anything like that. I just go out and do this stuff on my own. I’ve also never solicited a gig. All of these events come about because someone invites me to go speak or lead a retreat or whatever.
The dates are as follows:
Oct. 26-28 Weekend Sesshin Kajo Zendo in Finland
Oct. 30 ľ Nov. 4 International Lay Buddhists Forum in Malaga, Spain
Nov. 7 University of Koblenz, Koblenz, Germany
Nov. 9 Dogen Zendo Frankfurt , Germany
Nov. 10 Balance Yoga Frankfurt, Germany
Nov. 14 Dharma Buchladen Berlin, Germany
Nov. 17- 18 Merchant City Yoga Glasgow, Scotland
Nov. 23-25 Weekend Sesshin at Fawcett Mill Fields, Penrith, Lake Districtá UK Sponsored by Yoga Manchester
Nov. 25 Manchester, England Sponsored by Yoga Manchester
Dec. 1 London, England
The gig in London is awaiting a few points to be finalized. I’m also waiting to hear about further details on the November 7th thing at the University of Koblenz. I believe that all of these events are open to the public . You can use the links above to contact the venues and make sure.
This year’s thing started off with me getting invited to be the keynote speaker at the International Lay Buddhist Forum in Malaga, Spain. That sounded pretty exciting. And because they were paying my way over to Europe (but not paying anything else) I was able to get in touch with other people who’d been inviting me to do stuff on the right side of the Atlantic Ocean but who were not offering plane fare. So I picked up a bunch of other gigs and now off I am going!
That’s pretty much how it works. I’m not after the big bucks here. But if I can’t at least get transportation expenses and a place to stay I can’t even consider an invitation. I don’t have an organization behind me that can foot the bills. I’m just a guy who lives in an apartment and writes books, not the leader of some megabucks religious corporation. (Although we are trying to incorporate Dogen Sangha Los Angeles. I don’t know when that’s gonna be finalized. But that’s not gonna be any kind of mega-sangha either.)
I need to start up a cult. That’s where the money is!
The folks at the International Lay Buddhists Forum asked me to speak on the subject of sex and Buddhism. So that’s what I’m going to talk about there. Since I am, of course, one of the sexiest Buddhists around! Because my book Sex, Sin and Zen has just come out in Germany, I’ll probably talk about that subject a bit at the German gigs. Although I think maybe the folks at the University of Koblenz have other ideas.
The events in Glasgow, the Lake District in the UK and possibly London will be one-day zazen sittings with a more workshop style atmosphere than a standard zen sesshin. So I’ll talk more than I would at a sesshin and give more hints about how I’ve managed to keep doing daily zazen for so long. I think the event at Balance Yoga in Frankfurt will also be like that.
Anyway, they will all be great. So show up if you can
