Something to go with your zen meditation?

Something to go with your zen meditation?

OK. It’s confirmed. I will be hosting a five-day zazen retreat at Benediktushof in Germany (near Wurzburg) October 12-17, 2014. Contact Benediktushof directly to ask about registration. The one we did last year was wonderbar! Benediktushof is a great space, very quiet and a perfect atmosphere for extended meditation practice.

Also, there is still time to sign up for our Zen and Yoga Retreat at Mt. Baldy May 9-11, 2014. But do it now! Cushion space is going fast! This will be a beautiful retreat high in the mountains of California in a dedicated Zen space with all the stilling atmosphere you could ever want. Your cell phones and internet won’t work up there. That alone is worth the trip! I’ll be available for private dokusan sessions with all members.

I am going to be in Norway from Sept. 24 to 28, Finland from Oct. 3 to 5, the Netherlands from Oct. 24 to 29 and the UK sometime after that. I do not have details yet. But I do have a few large gaps in my schedule that I’d like to fill. They are:

OCTOBER 6-11

OCTOBER 18-23

I’m talking to some folks in Munich about doing something there during one of these weeks. I’d really like to set something up in Berlin one of those weeks as well. If you’re interested in helping me set that stuff up, please write to me at bw@hardcorezen.info and we’ll get to work on it. It doesn’t have to be Munich or Berlin!

There is a lot I’m willing to do! I can lead retreats of one, two, three or more days. I can give talks. I can sing on the street for loose Euros. I’m very versatile!

Your donations are always gratefully accepted!

Registration is still open for our Zen & Yoga Retreat at Mt. Baldy Zen Center May 9-11, 2014 but not for much longer! Sign up now! Seats are going fast! Seriously!

ZERO DEFEX will play on May 16, 2014 in Akron, OH

how about showing your movie in germany? Maybe I could arrange sth. in Wuerzburg before or after the Benediktushof Retreat. At least I could try . Still, if nothing comes up to fill the gap, you’re welcome to stay at my place. You can sleep in my private Zendo. It’s not very big, but so are you, when I remember it correctly ;)

    Dear Ask Mr. Zen,

I think the transliteration is “Vunderbar” not “Wonderbar?” A “Wonderbar” I think is a piece of Wonder Bread mashed up with a Snicker’s candy bar, baked in the oven at 350 for 1/2 and hour, then deep-fried to a golden brown. Mmmmm. State Fair-o-licious!

Speaking of deep-fried State Fair-o-liscious, I breaded this elsewhere on a thread about migraines where the return of chi from the head-top to the tan-tien was asserted (is this Zen?– have another bite!):

‘I don’t know migraines, never had one. But I wonder about chi returning down the front of the body.

Cranial-sacral theory is really near and dear to my heart. The premise there is that changes in the volume of fluid that surrounds the spinal cord and the brain causes flexion and extension of the entire body. The free movement of the sacrum on horizontal, diagonal, and vertical axises inherent in the structure of the joins with the pelvis is critical, as is the movement of the occiput, the sphenoid, the temporals and parietals. At the top of the head in the suture between the parietals is a set of nerves that control the changes in volume of the spinal fluid.

My understanding is that when awareness is allowed a freedom of location with the relaxed movement of breath, some of the phenomena described as the circulation and accumulation of chi may be felt in connection with the sense of location and the movement of breath. Yuanwu said, “when finally you arrive at towering up like a wall miles-high, you will know that there are not so many things”; at such a moment, I believe there is a kind of communication from the sacrum to the parietals and the nerves that control the rhythm of the cranial-sacral fluid. It’s like a pair of tin-cans with strings and washers, and the return is in the cranial-sacral rhythm and the way in which it eases the nerve exits along the spine, until the ability to feel is live throughout the body to the surface of the skin. That is why Yuanwu said:

“you should know that at the headtops of all buddhas and enlightened ones is a marvelous means for ‘altering the bones’ and changing one’s very being.”

That is why Chen Man-Ch’ing in Thirteen Chapters said:

“With this method of circulating ch’i, it overflows into the sinews, reaches the bone marrow, fills the diaphragm, and manifests in the skin and hair.” (trans. Doug Wile, pg 17)

You could say that the chi returns from the head-top to the skin and hair all over the body, and the freedom of the sense of location to move is like that falling asleep, except the eyes are open.

I offer this as an alternative understanding, but I can quite relate to your not wanting any kind of meditative experience at all. I could still sit the lotus when my back tweaked (the last few days), but all I could do as far as when my awareness was in my lower abdomen was relax before and behind, and find my calves when the movement of breath brought them around.’

Pass the ‘taters, pass the peas…

Hey, Mark. I’m very parietal to a good head scratch, and that quote above reminded me of a sweet-spot at the top of my head, just where the skull starts to slope down to the back, which is just super-aaaaaaaaah when my wife scratches it. There is a finger-pap sized shallowness there too, which sometimes feels like a deeper indent than at other times. Having a head-scratch can make everything else fall away, but that indent-spot feels like some kind of major artery for the psycho-physical nervous energy which scratching seems to vent and in doing so return to some kind of more tidy balance. Does this resonate at all with what you’re talking about?

Everyone (who accepts their illusory selfhood, Fred) has such experiences, but not everyone gives them notice, or assigns them exceptional value, which is an appropriate response, IMO.

Only if it is in the interest of the experiencer to exercise bragging rights do they become valuable, if, for example, their chosen profession happens to be spiritual adviser, no matter what tradition.

to their state of not existing.

Daniel and me aren’t the same person. We don’t agree on a lot of things. Why then would you view us as the same person, you piece of shit?

Is it because we both had problems with Soto Zen originally? And like a child you box us up “as the others” or “not one of us”?

Ouch. Reminds me of the time I had kidney stones and I tried to sit through it. I went greenish, or so I was told. Three hours later in the Accident & Emergency waiting room, any kind sitting was no longer an option, and so I danced the Zombie shuffle. Someone told me to sit down. I told them to shut up.

Easy! Just get one of those free monthlies at the health food store with all the New Age ads, find two teachings or disciplines and hyphenate them, and attach some indigenous name.
